What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a fun, social, easy to learn sport that is said to be the fastest growing sport in the world. It can be played at almost any age or skill level because it is low impact and as simple as hitting a ball over a low net with a paddle.
The rules are easy and simple for beginners but the game is also quick and competitive for experienced players. You’ll find that once you start playing pickleball…it will be hard to stop!
A mix of tennis and badminton, pickleball is played as singles or doubles and on a court that looks similar to a tennis court.
What do you need to play pickleball?
To play pickleball you need at least one other person, or three if you want to play doubles, pickleball paddles for everyone and a ball and a net.
Pickleball paddles use to be made of wood but are now made from lightweight composite materials. The ball has holes in it – like Swiss cheese! The net is similar to that on a tennis court.
History of pickleball
The history of pickleball dates back to 1965 in Washington State, USA. A couple of families were vacationing together and one day when the dads had returned from golf, they found their families sitting around doing nothing.
The property had an old badminton court and with some improvisation, some paddles were fashioned and a perforated plastic ball was found. The rules were designed so that the whole family could play together and have fun.
The game has been growing in popularity ever since and is now played all over the world. It has been kept to its original purpose which is a game for all ages and skill levels…and that is the history of pickleball!
